If you have the luxury of choosing when to visit Spain, go during May, June or September. Although Spain is a gorgeous and life-affirming country year round, these ideal travel months allow you to experience the balmier days on Spain’s calendar while avoiding the crushing heat and overwhelming influx of tourists. If you visit between December or February, try Spain’s south and southeast coasts, where the winter is milder. If your visit falls between June and August, you’ll find relief from the oppressing heat and crowds in the northwestern reaches.

If you’ll be traveling to Spain, you’ll benefit from learning a bit of Spanish. Unlike other areas of Europe, Spaniards speak little English. You’ll find English speaking Spaniards in the more touristy areas, but you’ll win their sympathy and respect faster if you at least attempt to speak their native tongue.
